New York, NY

We are parents, too. We think traveling well and traveling with children shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. We have limited vacation time, and we’re not spending our few days of freedom in lousy hotels eating bad food. We know the world is full of wonderful resorts, cool urban escapes and far-flung lodges that can make our time with our kids count. We want it all, and we don’t think it should be so hard to find. So we’re going to share it with you.

A Tale of Three Cities

Amber Hunter

While we will never say no to an island getaway, sometimes it's nice to be in the hustle and bustle of a city. We've pulled together three of our favorites (two of which still offer a beachy vibe) for those vacations that are more fast-paced.

STAY: Stay downtown at the stylish Crosby Street Hotel, stay at the midtown Viceroy, or head uptown to the hip The Mark.

EAT: Alice's Tea Cup for a whimsical afternoon, Balthazar for an "only in NY" feel, Bubby's for brunch, & Fat Radish for a downtown date night.

DO: Shop along 5th Avenue,  visit Chelsea Market & walk the High Line, browse the stacks at the Strand, wander the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art or the Natural History Museum, head to the rooftop bar at the Refinery for a cocktail, have a picnic in Central Park, head to Brooklyn for the Botanical Gardens, wander the paths of Bohemians in Greenwich Village and Washington Square Park

STAY: Glam it up at the classic W South Beach, take in the beautiful pools at the Setai Miami, and for a quieter stay, relax at the Mandarin Oriental.

EAT: Head over to Coral Gables for brunch at Green Street Cafe, Juvia for a romantic rooftop meal, Le Chat Noir is perfect for a few cozy drinks, Tongue & Cheek for Cuban fare, and if you spend the day in Wynwood, have a no frills meal at Proof Pizza and Pasta

DO: Shop along Lincoln Road, head to the Wynwood Art District to see the walls and peruse the galleries, visit the Perez Art Museum, walk along Ocean Drive, head to the historic Venetian Pool,  or simply lay out at the beach with a fun floaty.

STAY:  The Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel offers the best of both location-wise, on the beach but close to downtown while hip Palihotel Melrose is situated on trendy Melrose Avenue.

EAT: Find an In-N-Out for classic burgers, eat farm-to-table fare at Brentwood Country Mart, have brunch at Huckleberry Cafe, and head to Animal Restaurant for date night.

DO: Shop along Melrose Avenue and Robertson Boulevard, ride the ferris wheel at the Santa Monica Pier, spend a day at Universal Studios Hollywood, sprawl out at Venice Beach, and visit the California Space Center to see the space shuttle Endeavor.

We could go on and on about each of these cities, but to spare you our gushing, we've left you with these small introductions. For the full low-down on each of these, head over to our city guides
