New babies bring happiness, love, family celebrations and, of course, lots of sleepless nights and minimal "me" time. So whether you're expanding your family or just starting one, marking the exciting arrival with a pre-baby getaway is a great way to relax, bond with your partner and enjoy one last flight where you won't be lugging a diaper bag the size of an SUV. We checked in with Auberge Resorts, who are pretty expert when it comes to romance (think Napa's Auberge du Soleil and Anguilla's Malliouhana), to find out what's shaking at their newest resort in Costa Rica. Here's how to babymoon pura-vida style at AltaGracia.
Even if you're too pregnant to gallop off into the hills, go visit the resort's gorgeous stables and meet their horses. All the science shows that spending time with animals actually lowers stress levels (you probably need this, mama-to-be), plus there's an amazing collection of handcrafted artisan saddles, a birthing room to learn about equine breeding and you can send hubby off on a ride while you relax by the pool.
Hungry much? Spend a day at Quesos Canaán, a sustainable cheese farm where you can do tastings and make your own Swiss to bring home, age and eat in three months. Nearby as well is the town of Cedral, in the coffee-growing region at the foot of the Talamanca Mountains. Learn how the organic beans are raised, harvested and brewed, and bring some with you to kickstart foggy mornings when you arrive back home. The San Isidro farmer's market and a chocolate farm are other great spots to explore Costa Rican cuisine.
Los Cusingos Wildlife Refuge
Pre-Colombian petroglyphs, lush rainforest trails and a remarkable number of distinctive animal species make this wildlife refuge a fascinating spot for learning about local flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for capuchin monkeys, colorful parrots, armadillos and butterflies. Los Cusingos is only thirty minutes from the resort, so this is an easy way to add a quick eco-tour into your calendar and still be back in time for an afternoon spa appointment.
