We are parents, too. We think traveling well and traveling with children shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. We have limited vacation time, and we’re not spending our few days of freedom in lousy hotels eating bad food. We know the world is full of wonderful resorts, cool urban escapes and far-flung lodges that can make our time with our kids count. We want it all, and we don’t think it should be so hard to find. So we’re going to share it with you.

Essential Summer Travel Gear

Henley Vazquez

Parenthood changes lives in many positive ways. Packing is not one of them. For families, the days of traveling light are over, but there’s plenty of gear to help ease the transition. We checked in with Jennifer Cattaui, owner of New York’s hip children’s store Babesta, to see what she recommends this summer.

“This stroller folds down to overhead compartment size so you don’t have to gate check your stroller or wait on the other side.”

“Fly Safe attaches to your airplane seat to create a five-point harness for a child. Anyone who has traveled with toddlers knows that the lap belt is not the most effective restraint in turbulence plus kids can slip out to run up and down the aisles.”

“7 AM’s design has all the diaper bag components but is styled like a travel bag and made from lightweight material. My kids are ten and seven, and I still use these as my carry-on; the diaper compartment is perfect for storing make-up. It’s really the first diaper bag that you can use as a regular bag for a long time.”

“Blow up this bed rail and put it under the fitted sheet. It’s very compact when deflated and is great whether staying with friends or in a hotel to keep kids from rolling off bed.”

“This inflatable car booster seat is for the bigger kids that don’t need their convertible anymore but still require some positioning.”

“I love that these cute board books give a bit of literary history, so parents and kids can connect over the classics. It’s summer reading for toddlers.”
